Servant Leadership is a paradoxical term which illuminates the true nature of genuine leadership at ever level of life (workplace, community, family, church and world) and also brings us to the very heart of Christian discipleship, the way of Jesus. Servant leadership, as a radical redefinition of power and nature of leadership, offers a compelling model for contemporary Christian living and a spiritual path that connects faith with daily life. In this course, we explore central themes of servant leadership - comunion, community, compassion, call and power - and thier interrelatedness, providing a context for spiritual practice and introduction to other Core classes.

Date & Time: Saturday, February 4th, 10:00am – 4:00pm

Location: St. Stephen’s, Pittsfield

Led By: The Rev. Annie Ryder

Cost: $40.00 (Lunch Provided)

Come and rest in God. This six-hour introductory workshop teaches the method of Centering Prayer and encourages a daily prayer practice. There will be four “conferences” and two periods of Centering Prayer. The topics covered in the conferences are:

Prayer as a relationship with God,

Centering Prayer and the Christian Contemplative Heritage

The method of Centering Prayer, taught and practiced

The use of the Sacred Word in Centering Prayer explained

The fruits of Centering Prayer and extending the benefits into daily life

Centering Prayer is rooted in the word of God, both in scripture and in the person of Jesus Christ. It is an effort to renew the Christian contemplative tradition handed down to us from St. Paul, who writes of the intimate knowledge of Christ that comes through love. St. Gregory the Great, in the 6th century, called it “resting in God.” In this resting the mind and heart are not so much seeking God as beginning to experience, to “taste” what they have been seeking. Come and see.

This offering at Servant Leadership School in the Berkshires will be led by the Rev. Annie Ryder, who is a commissioned presenter with extensive training from Contemplative Outreach, an international organization founded by Fr. Thomas Keating.

Wear comfortable clothes; bring a pillow or prayer stool if you wish. Invite your friends from the Roman Catholic tradition. Bring an open mind and an open heart. A simple soup luncheon will be served. Please plan to stay for all six hours. Hopefully we can begin to create ongoing Centering Prayer groups in the Berkshires.

If you would like more information prior to the workshop, read Open Heart, Open Mind by Thomas Keating or log onto www.contemplativeoutreach.org

“Nonviolence presents a chance for all parties to rise above their present condition and become more of what God created them to be.” -Walter Wink in Powers That Be

Our faith invites us into a radical definition of power in our individual, organizational and corporate lives. While we know the misuse of power has the potential to bring us and those around us severe suffering, we can be stumped as to how to redefine power as people of faith. This workshop will examine how we shift from the domination and control of a “power over” paradigm to the power and engagement of servant leadership in the likeness of Jesus. We will learn spiritual practices such as Befriending Reactivity and other Nonviolent Communication practices which brings the redefinition of power into our thoughts, hearts and actions as Christians.

Dr. Ruth D. Anderson, received her M.A. from Kent State University and her Ph.D. from the University of Oregon in Communication. Ruth, a professor at North Carolina State University for 15 years and then vice-president of Kindermusik International for eight years, brings both theory and practice to servant leadership. Currently, Ruth is Director of the Servant Leadership School of Greensboro where she teaches and learns in Servant Leadership 1, Centering Prayer, Compassion Circles, Enneagram and through other servant leadership experiences.

Dates & Time: Tuesdays, beginning March 3rd and running for 10 weeks; 7:00 - 9:00 pm

Location: St. John’s, Williamstown

Class Facilitator: The Rev. Dr. Hannah Anderson

Cost: $75.00

“To be dependent on ourselves, our own wealth, our own skills, our own goodness, the approval of others, that is dependence on bondage. To be dependent on God, absolutely dependent, that is independence. Dependence on God is the only independence. Insecurity in God is the only security.”

- Richard Rohr, Ministry of Money Retreat

For many of us money is a frustrating and stressful topic. In today’s economy we worry about gas prices, food prices and how to manage it all. In this core servant leadership class, we will step back and examine our relationship with money in a friendly and safe environment. We will examine how our patterns of earning, spending and giving away money offer an intriguing insight into our minds, hearts and acts of service.

With the use of Lynn Twist’s book The Soul of Money: Reclaiming the Wealth of Our Inner Resources, we will work with our cultural massages of scarcity and guilt around money. We will then examine what would happen in our lives if we shifted toward experiences of sufficiency, freedom, and purpose in relationship to our resources. Time will be given to reflect on biblical stories and our own stories around these themes. Finally, we will explore money in the context of our call and the dream God has for our lives.

What others have said about this class:

“The Soul of Money class helped me to see my deepest values are not only supported with the flow of my financial resources, but also with the flow of my energy, time, and personal qualities. I learned, more importantly, that it is not the size of that flow, but that there is a flow, There is great pleasure in being a part of that.”

“It gives one courage in gaining on authentic living to be in company with others seeking understanding of abundance rather than the worldview of scarcity. The text we used was very useful and the leadership could not have been better. Slowly and with joy, we shared our experiences and opened new avenues of what is possible and from what strengths we might lead.”

“My husband and I found that the Soul of Money class gave us many tools and ideas that helped us to re-examine our relationship with money and the ways we use it. The book was a great foundation, Hannah a wonderful facilitator, and the group interaction helped to make the class a freeing and truly enjoyable experience. With what is going on with the economy, the timing couldn’t have been better.”
